FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Tena koutou, Tena koutou, Tena koutou katoa. Welcome to Maori Language week. There will be lots of promotions in NZ this week, to promote increased Maori language use. At Maungawhau we are fortunate to have a few teachers committed to improving their Te Reo, who attend weekly night classes. This year Ms Violet van Muller has been employed for a day per week to actively teach Te Reo and Tikanga Maori in our Year 3-6 classes weekly, to further develop our students and teachers skills. We believe that our Junior school are very good at referring to Maori greetings, days of the week, numbers, colours and simple waiata. However, the extent of our teaching of Maori has rarely developed higher up our school much beyond this. Violet’s input since this beginning of this year, is changing our knowledge and understanding positively. Kia ora Violet, thank you for your input and commitment.

My thanks to the parents of year 4-6 students who attended school last Thursday night to attend the Student Led Conferences. Thanks also to the parents who attended the Art exhibition. The standard of work was incredible across the school, as shown in the photos shared with you. My thanks to Robyn Bull for organising this.

This week sees our Middle School attending MOTAT, and a group of students attending the Champ of Champions Gymnastics competition this Thursday.

Good news – our Board of Trustees has agreed to upgrade Rooms 22-29 in our school. During the next school holidays, the wall display boards in Rooms 22-24 will be replaced with autex as per downstairs in this block, and the carpet and vinyl flooring will be replaced. In Rooms 25-28 the carpet and vinyl will all be replaced. In Room 29, the old carpet and vinyl will be replaced with vinyl to make it more suitable for our Garden to Table programme. WE NEED SOME PHYSICAL HELP FROM ADULTS PLEASE on the last day of this term shifting all of the tables, chairs and most other furniture into the Senior Habitat. We will also need some help to reinstate classrooms before the end of the school holidays. At the moment the date we are looking at is the last Thursday (11 October, of the school holidays), however, this is still to be confirmed. If you can help can you please let Ben Fahey know so that he can co-ordinate a massive moving plan. Like any house renovation project, we are looking at this as a short term inconvenience for a long term improvement for our students’ learning environments.

Staff Leaving – Two teachers are leaving our school at the end of this term. Anita Hewett (Room 17, teacher of Year 3 students), who has been at our school for 6 ½ years is staying within education, but is trying a new role. She has been appointed as a Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) for the Massey cluster, which is closer to her home and a new challenge. Gillian Berry who has taught at our school for 4 years,  (Room 10, teacher of Year 1 students) is taking a break from full-time teaching.
Merrilyn Drummond, an experienced teacher from Queensland, Australia will be teaching in Room 17 for term 4 and Kelbe Bishop a graduate from Alabama University, USA, will be teaching Room 10 for term 4. Kelbe has recently been a relieving teacher at Gladstone school, Mt Albert, Auckland.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Anita and Gillian for their hard work and commitment to our school, and wish them all the best for the future.

Have a great week,
Delanee Dale

2018 Art Exhibition

Above is a snapshot of some of the very impressive artwork that was on display last week. Room 17 (top row middle photo) made and produced their own storybooks. Most of the artwork is still displayed on the walls so do try and pop in and have a look over the next couple of days.

EAT MY LUNCH SCHOOLS CHALLENGE AT MAUNGAWHAU SCHOOL

The Maungawhau student action group have decided to support the Eat My Lunch Schools Challenge.  Thanks to the support from the public the Eat My Lunch company has been able to provide over 950,000 lunches to kiwi kids in need and we would like to support them with their mission to provide the one-millionth free lunch.

Eat My Lunch is a company which was founded by Lisa King and Michael Meredith in 2015 to help alleviate the problem of child poverty in NZ.  On average, 1 in 4 kiwi kids (25,000) go to school every day without lunch.

The Eat My Lunch motto is ‘Buy One, Give One.’  For every lunch that is purchased from the company, one lunch is provided to a child who would otherwise have gone without lunch. So for the cost of $10 a healthy nutritious lunch will be delivered to your child at school but at the same time, you will be making a difference to a kiwi child in need.

We encourage as many of you as possible to support the Eat My Lunch Day at Maungawhau School on Friday 28 September. The instructions on how to order your lunch through the Eat my lunch website https://www.eatmylunch.nz/ will be forwarded in a separate communication asap.

All lunch orders will need to be placed online by Wednesday 26 September.
We thank you for your support!
Ms Plaisier & the Maungawhau School Action Group

MESSAGES FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE

Absences – To report your child’s absence please either email the classroom teacher (cc office@maungawhau.school.nz) or alternatively use the report an absence tab on the school website. Please make sure your child’s full name, room number and the reason for the absence is clearly given. This ensures the correct codes are recorded on the daily roll as per the Ministry of Education guidelines.
All holiday leave during term time needs to be addressed to the principal (cc office@maunagwhau.school.nz and the classroom teacher) in advance, please.

Clothing – A reminder to please make sure a spare set of clothes is packed in your child’s bag. We also ask that if the school has provided any clothing items to your child for any emergencies that they are then returned to the school office asap, please.

CAN YOU HELP?

Sausage Sizzle – The next sausage sizzle is scheduled to run next Friday 21 September, led by rooms 19 and 20 (Senior Habitat). We are also looking for volunteers to collect money and orders in the morning (21 September) from 8:30-8:45am in the school hall. Please contact Karen in the office if you can help with this.

We would really appreciate a volunteer to oversee the setup and organisation of the sausage sizzle fundraisers. If you can help please contact Karen in the office asap, please.

LIBRARY NEWS

Overdue Book Reminders
We have a new email system to let students and parents know about overdue library books.
Parents will automatically be emailed once a book is more than two weeks overdue. This will detail the book’s title, author, a cover image if available and the date it was due. This will be followed up by a second email reminder a week later if the book is not returned.
Middle and Senior students can renew overdue books if they are still reading them by letting Library Monitors or teachers know during their library time or seeing Lisa before school.
Sometimes books miss being scanned when they are returned so if you think an overdue book has been returned, please let me know so I can look for it on the shelves.
Any questions, please let me know. Lisa Smith, Library Manager
