Message from the Principal
Welcome to Maungawhau School and our provisions for ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) education. Diana Mobberley, our trained specialist teacher (pictured) and our specially equipped ESOL room are a feature of our school and valued by our staff and community. Students enjoy opportunities for specialised teaching in small groups and quickly form close relationships with both Diana and her support staff.
The teacher has created an attractive and comfortable teaching space with charts and posters, first language labels and student work on display. The room is well recourced with computers, big books, reading texts and a range of language games and activities. (Ministry of Education ESOL Verification Report, April 2005)
Students are carefully assessed upon arrival at the school in order to ascertain their levels of English. They are carefully placed in mainsteam home-rooms where it is found that English acquisition is accelerated. Additional support is given to these students in home-rooms as required.
Support staff are timetabled to work in different classrooms providing in-classroom support with literacy and maths to targeted students. They are also able to provide more intensive support for newly arrived students. (Ministry of Education ESOL Verification Report, April 2005)
Maungawhau School has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Ministry of Education. Copies of the Code are available from the Ministry of Education website at www.minedu.govt.nz
I am very proud of the provisions for our ESOL and International students and welcome your enquiries.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Deborah Cooke (Principal).
