Dear Parents/Caregivers

We welcome the following students to Maungawhau School who have started their educational journey with us recently in rooms 12 and 18. Milan in room 12, Theo, Maya and Toby in room 18.

A sincere thank you to Liz Love, the middle school teachers and all of the parents who helped at MOTAT last week. I hear that it was a fantastic day, well organised with lots of learning occurring.

I have included in this newsletter some links requested from the FOMS agenda last week the first is sharing our Bullying policy which was updated this term, and the other is around the usage of Tuanui.

Regarding Tuanui, our Board of Trustees and myself have been aware that the flooring surface, chosen over others, because it wouldn’t cause grazing if a student fell over on it, is very slippery when wet. We are currently investigating solutions around this. Over the weekend we had the cover cleaned and today we are getting the flooring surface cleaned. For the next two weeks, we will be testing how slippery the surface is, following the clean. You can be, rest assured that after the large financial contribution our community made to install Tuanui, we are committed to solving the flooring issue. Once we have sorted this, we will get the courts repainted as requested by some of our sports teams.

Have a great week,
Delanee Dale

Speech and Champ of Champs 2018

Two flavours (gluten-free) available are:

  1. Beef at $2ea
  2. Chicken at $2.50ea

All children will receive one stamp per sausage ordered which also indicates what flavour has been ordered.
At 1:10pm all students who placed an order then head to the relevant pickup point for their sausage/s in the school hall.

Please note that ezlunch will not be available for orders this Friday 21 September (Sausage Sizzle Day) and next Friday 28 September (Eat My Lunch Day). Please pack your child’s own lunch if they are not ordering either a sausage or Eat My Lunch.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this.

Help with Shifting Classroom Furniture
WE NEED SOME PHYSICAL HELP FROM ADULTS PLEASE on the last day of this term shifting all of the tables, chairs and most other furniture into the Senior Habitat and School Library. We will also need some help to reinstate classrooms before the end of the school holidays.

Shifting furniture out: Friday 28th of September, meet in School Staffroom 9am
Shifting furniture back in: Thursday 11th of October, meet in School Staffroom 9am

If you are able to assist on either of these days please contact Ben Fahey via email

Why? Our Board of Trustees has agreed to upgrade Rooms 22-29 in our school.
What? The wall display boards in Rooms 22-24 will be replaced with autex as per downstairs in this block, and the carpet and vinyl flooring will be replaced. In Rooms 25-28 the carpet and vinyl will all be replaced. In Room 29, the old carpet and vinyl will be replaced with vinyl to make it more suitable for our Garden to Table programme.

Like any house renovation project, we are looking at this as a short term inconvenience for a long term improvement for our students’ learning environments.

Thank you for your consideration,
Ben Fahey
Deputy Principal

This year’s Garden Stall Team would love donations of strawberry plants and herbs up until the Friday before the school fair, please.  Any contributions can be left outside the garage roller door. Thank you!

The Maungawhau student action group have decided to support the Eat My Lunch Schools Challenge.  Thanks to the support from the public the Eat My Lunch company has been able to provide over 950,000 lunches to kiwi kids in need and we would like to support them with their mission to provide the one-millionth free lunch.

Eat My Lunch is a company which was founded by Lisa King and Michael Meredith in 2015 to help alleviate the problem of child poverty in NZ.  On average, 1 in 4 kiwi kids (25,000) go to school every day without lunch.

The Eat My Lunch motto is ‘Buy One, Give One.’  For every lunch that is purchased from the company, one lunch is provided to a child who would otherwise have gone without lunch. So for the cost of $10 a healthy nutritious lunch will be delivered to your child at school but at the same time, you will be making a difference to a kiwi child in need.

We encourage as many of you as possible to support the Eat My Lunch Day at Maungawhau School on Friday 28 September. Follow the instructions below on how to order your lunch through the Eat my lunch website

All lunch orders will need to be placed online by Wednesday 26 September.
We thank you for your support!
Ms Plaisier & the Maungawhau School Action Group

Due to the large numbers of our students scootering to and from school, can we please ask that you remind your child/ren to only walk their scooters through the school grounds when arriving and leaving school. There is just too much foot traffic inside the school grounds at these times and as a result, too many near misses.
Thank you for your cooperation with this.

Absences – To report your child’s absence please either email the classroom teacher (cc or alternatively use the report an absence tab on the school website. Please make sure your child’s full name, room number and the reason for the absence is clearly given. This ensures the correct codes are recorded on the daily roll as per the Ministry of Education guidelines.
All holiday leave during term time needs to be addressed to the principal (cc and the classroom teacher) in advance, please.

Clothing – A reminder to please make sure a spare set of clothes is packed in your child’s bag. We also ask that if the school has provided any clothing items to your child for any emergencies that they are then returned to the school office asap, please.
