A very warm welcome to all our new-joiners to the Maungawhau community – children, parents, caregivers, and of course staff. We hope you’ve had a great start to the year so far.
Thanks to everyone for supporting the trial drop-off zones on Ellerton and Wairiki. Feedback received so far indicates these are working well, and so we plan to make them permanent. For the safety of our children, it’s critical all car-parking rules around the school are strictly observed.
Late last year the Government announced a one-off funding boost for schools to spend on property infrastructure. Maungawhau was allocated $400,000, which needs to be spent over the next two years. There is more flexibility in what the money can be spent on compared to the usual property grant, and so this represents a great opportunity to invest in other parts of the school outside the core Ministry-owned assets. We are therefore requesting to apply a portion of this funding towards upgrading outdoor areas, eg relaying of surfaces, additional seating and shading, and improving landscaping. Additionally we will request an upgrade to some older student bathrooms, the bathrooms and kitchen in the school hall and the Tuanui re-surfacing.
This one-off funding also provides an opportunity for the school to think ahead about its ongoing fundraising goals. We have some ideas but we want to get the community’s input, and so we are preparing a survey that we will send round for your feedback.
You may have also seen that the Ministry of Education has introduced a new Donations Scheme whereby schools in Deciles 1 -7 can elect to receive $150 per student from the Government in return for requesting donations from families. We thought we should clarify that because Maungawhau is a Decile 10 school, we are not allowed to opt-in to this scheme. Our thanks to those in the community who have already paid their donations for this year.
