Newsletter 20: Term 1, Week 3 (18/02/2020)
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK |
| | Dear Parent/Caregivers My thanks to the parents who attended last Wednesday night’s ‘Meet the Teacher’ session. We value our engagement with our school community. If you didn’t make it to this session, I suggest that you follow up with your child’s classroom teacher, in case there is some important information which you missed. We welcome all of our new five year olds who have started in Room 11 with Miss Love. We are enjoying having you join our school community. Bikes and scooters - I am encouraged to see so many students coming to and from school by scooter or bikes, this augurs well for our traffic issues. A gentle reminder not to ride these when in the school grounds - as we have lots of children and some blind corners in our school. | |
Car Drop off and Pick Ups At the end of 2019 our Board of Trustees organised for Auckland Transport to observe the school drop off and pick up issues and they contacted neighbouring schools for suggestions as to how to improve school gate congestion. The drop off, pick up area appeared to be the most effective, hence our new signage. This is also an opportunity for students to demonstrate some self management skills by getting themselves into class each day and organised for the school day. My thanks to the car drivers who are sticking to the drop off/pick up signage, as this is improving traffic at our school gate. My thanks to parents who are assisting with the year 3 & 4 trip up Maungawhau this week, where our students will learn about the history of Maungawhau from a Ngati Whatu guide. Congratulations to the 33 year six students who have applied to be House Leaders for 2020 at Maungawhau School. I was very impressed by the thought and maturity demonstrated in each student’s application. Their individual suggestions on how we can make our school better made for interesting reading. One idea which came through regularly was having students input in our school newsletter writing for our student audience. To this end we will adopt this idea, as often as possible. FOMS (Friends of Maungawhau School Community) - Our first FOMS meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday 25 February starting at 7pm in our school staffroom. During the first meeting I will be sharing the school Vision, and our school goals and priorities for 2020. All are welcome. I look forward to seeing you this Friday 21 February at our class picnics on our school field. Please see an email that was sent yesterday with information and order forms for the Brazillian BBQ. Order forms are also available from the school office if needed. Delanee Dale

COMMUNITY RESOURCES SURVEY |
| | Dear Parent and Caregivers, In term 4 of 2019 I sent a survey out for you to complete if you believed you had access to resources of which you were happy to share with Maungawhau School. As a result we have had several offers from parents of resources and facilities they have access to. Parents and caregivers have offered to share expertise and give up time to help teachers with a range of tasks. A summary of this information has been fed back to Maungawhau Staff with the intention that as different needs arise during the year we can contact different members of our community and work alongside each other to produce optimal learning experiences for our children. If you have not completed the survey but would like to, please follow this link. On behalf of Maungawhau staff many thanks for your support and consideration. Kind regards, Ben Fahey | |
Thank you to those students who have returned overdue books from last year. There are still a few books issued to children so please return them as soon as you can. Library books are due back before 8.50am on your child’s library day. Please make sure library books are kept either in a book bag or plastic bag, especially if your child has swimming on their library day. Middle and Senior school students may renew books if they are still reading them. If you notice a library book your child has taken home needs repairing, please return it to the library to be repaired properly, please don’t put tape on it at home. Students and parents can access information about what books children have out using the library Web Opac website at school (search: 172.16.0.2) or at home through the ‘Library Link’ on the Maungawhau School website. Children need their borrower number which is available from their teacher or Lisa in the Library. Children should write it in their reading log or homework notebooks so they have a record of it to use at home. They do not need a password. There is a video on the app to show you how to use it. If you have any questions, please pop in to the Library. Scholastic Book Club catalogues usually come home twice a term for you to order books through the school if you wish. They are an excellent way of adding to your home library and make wonderful gifts. A percentage from every order goes towards books purchased for the school library where all children can share and enjoy them. Thank you for your support. You can order and pay for Book Club orders online via the LOOP (Linked Online Ordering and Payments for Parents) website or download the mobile app. Information about how to order via LOOP is on the catalogue order form or visit www.scholastic.co.nz/LOOP. Orders made through LOOP will be linked to the school’s order and items will be sent to classes at the same time as paper orders. If you order online you don’t need to return anything to school. If you still want to order the traditional way, please return your completed order form and exact cash payment to the Library by the due date. Please make cheques payable to Scholastic New Zealand. Multiple orders may be paid for with a single payment. All orders will arrive approximately two weeks after the due date and will be delivered directly to your child’s class.
